Currently philosophy has lost its appeal. Especially when we look at Indonesia. At Gadjah Mada University, the only university in Indonesia which has the Faculty of Philosophy, arguably never produce much less national philosopher go national much less global. That said, the smart kids tend to choose a faculty other than the Faculty of Philosophy.
Around the twenties, an explanation of the meaning of life has been taken over by religion. Religion in the sense of spirituality, rather than worship an sich. Human need for knowledge taken over by the related sciences. Human need for technology taken over by the engineering sciences and industrial and economic needs of people will be taken over by economics, business and banking.
The only thing that can not be taken by the ongoing sciences that still continues to grow it is philosophy's critical science. Twenty one century filled with this critical challenge needs the role of philosophy better. Critical science is not enclosed by the other sciences. This philosophy answered the problems of life in this information technology era.
In this communication era, philosophy's roles is required in personal and social life because of the growing use of internet. The use of the Internet provides us visual images are not necessarily true, but it is emotionally powerful imagination at once. News presented on the internet is very convincing, though misleading or untrue. This can affect the netizens to act reckless. Here, the critical role of philosophy is needed.
Indonesia also had the great philosophers of their time. They helped build the ideology in Indonesia. Among them are Agus Salim, Sutan Alisjahbana, Driyarkara, Hamka, Soemantri Hadjoprakoso, Ki Hajar Dewantara, Mangkunagara IV, Mpu Kanwa, Mpu Tantular, Muhammad Natsir, Notonagoro, Pakubuwana IV, Ranggawarsita, Sukarno, Yasadipura, Tan Malaka and Hamzah Fansuri . Their critical work can still be appreciated until now
Above description give description about the presence of the Faculty of Philosophy of course still relevant and necessary in this information age. Philosophy as a science has not become out of date. It still needed in the growing world. Including in Indonesia today.
