Logotheraphy As Life Philosophy (II)

For several days the train glides across the towns and rural areas that were protected from enemy attacks. When it ha,ppened the Second World War was outrageous raging. Finally, early in the morning the train was moving slowly and shunt on a rail circuit. The passengers look anxiously through the windows. They want to know where they were now. Then the station name appear. Some people shout, but most of them froze. On the nameplate clearly written "Auschwitz". That's when Victor E. Frankl began developing and testing in the laboratory of his own life a psychological and philosophical theory then he called himself "Logotheraphy".


In the preface of Frankl book, Man's Search for Meaning, Gordon W. Allport wrote "How he could- all of his values were destroyed, suffering from hunger, cold and brutality, extermination tuned every hour-how he could find life was still worth? A psychiatrist who personally had faced such extreme stress is a psychiatrist which worth listening to.


I have not been able to put forward, when since Logotherapy as a philosophical theory and a theory of personality and became known in Indonesia, but according to Hanna Djumhana Bastaman records, Logotheraphy becoming known around 1975 in the Faculty of Psychology, University of Indonesia. The subject began to be studied through personal studies and discussions among limited, writings for lecture purposes, as well as publications in the mass media.


Still according to Hanna Djumhana Bastaman, a seminar on "Logotherapy and the Meaning of Life" has been organized by the Psychology-Psychiatry Study Group (1983), Foundation for Development of Creativity (1986), and the University of Indonesia Anniversary Committee XXXIX (1988). While the discussion of the link between Islam and Logotheraphy for the first done in forums KKA Endowment Paramadina Foundation (1988). Similarly Logotheraphy Role in Developing a Meaningful Life in Modern Life presented by the same forum as the closing event of year 1994.


How is the fate of Logotherapy as a philosophical theory, or philosophy of life, and as a theory of personality today in Indonesia? It's hard for me (the writer) to answer certainty, because I'm no longer living on the college environment. Personally, I want this Logotheraphy still studied and developed in Indonesia.


Of course, now the audiences want to know, what exactly is the core teachings and purpose of Logotheraphy as a philosophical theory, or perhaps more appropriately called a philosophy of life and personality theories and their application in everyday life ?. Logotheraphy teaches that man should be viewed as a whole, or gestalt, of the bio-psycho-spiritual that are inseparable. We can not understand humans and humanity, if we ignore the spiritual dimension. Because it is a source of strength and human health. In addition Logotheraphy also focus on human qualities, such as the will of meaning, or the will to live meaningful, conscience, creativity and sense of humor, and take advantage of those qualities to the development of mental health as well.


The heart of Logotherapy which is always loaded in the front page of the journal, published by The Institute of Logotheraphy are that; first, life is meaningful in every situation, even though in sadness. Secondly, we truly have the "will to live meaningful" that becomes our primary motivation in life. This contrasts with the view of Freudian psychoanalysis which states that our main motivation is "the will of pleasure" or the will to enjoy the pleasures that put emphasis on sexual pleasure.


The next one is, we are free to discover the meaning of life in what we do, we are experiencing, or at least the on our attitude in the face of suffering situations that can not be changed. Thus the core teachings of Logotheraphy as a philosophy of life or a philosophical theory.


As my closing paragraph, it should also be stated here that as a theory of human philosophy, Logotheraphy revealed that the reality of life is not to provide a balance without tension, but instead offer a special tension. Special tension in the form of tension between reality themselves at the present with the meanings that must be discovered. Present and future. And between the two polars the personality development process is underway.
