Learning As Engineering Students

Learning is a real activity. It should be done whether you are learning as engineering student or other fields of study. This means that we can not simply "imagine" or "think" that we are learning, but we must really face a problem in the field or books and really study .. Learning is as natural with other activities, such as eating, drinking, interacting with others, listen to friend's stories, or even take a dumb and pissing.

This paper is based on the writer's experience on learning at the Faculty of Engineering, Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta. Incidentally, the author accepted to study at the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The author thinks that in the Department or another Department in the Faculty of Engineering, more or less, the pattern and structure of the learning is the same.

Perhaps the writer's experience will be different from the experiences of other students who happened to be studying in the Faculties of non exact sciences or social sciences. But both students in exact Faculty and non exact Faculty with more or less the exact same aka almost also students of both disciplines must sit and learn to deal with the book.

The author hopes that this paper, can provide motivation as well as tips and tricks to learn to deal with lectures at the Faculty of Engineering in general ,and certainly on the other Faculties. However, the authors emphasize again here that you can not just think about that you are learning. You have facing a problem to learn, of course. You should actually face a book and sat down to learn it.

When we are in the age-old elementary school, we would have been taught by father or mother or our teachers with basic skills to learn. This skills are reading, writing and arithmetic, or better known as basic learning. Primarily in the Faculty of Engineering, numeracy skills is very important.

The first thing to do when learning is to read and understand the main ideas in a textbook. There are many methods to read depending on our needs of the study.

Read at a Glance

The first is to read at a glance. In this scanning method we only briefly read the words or phrases and sentences on a subject and compare and think about the title of the article or chapter or section concerned. The writer recommends that you should read at the first glance before starting to learn a subject thoroughly.

Read Carefuly/Summarize

After we read a book to read at a glance start seriously verbatim. Understand it well. And therefore, do not hesitate to summarize or make an overview of a subject. In the personal experience of the writer, to write a formula that often exist in a subject would be helpful at all. In addition, we will get used to read mathematical notation in a problem.

Authors emphasize once again the importance of writing in this learning phase. Whether it's writing a summary or make a small paper about what we have learned. Writing is a subtle psychomotor activity and to do that we have to maintain that knowledge that we have learned not to fly out. Perhaps summarizing activities and make this short paper is identical between students who studied at the exact sciences with other students studying the social science discipline.

Last troubleshooting that perhaps can not be overlooked when studying in the Faculty of Engineering is do not hesitate to try to answer the questions that are usually included in the end of each subject or a section. These questions are usually there at the end of a chapter or section. Depending on which book you read.

Try to Answer The Problems

Questions that require arithmetics skills primarily a matter not to be missed. Try to have a calculator to compute. Surely calculator suitable for scientific count. But then also do not need a very fancy calculator. It is enough if we have a calculator that can be used to calculate a simple count scientifically. Certainly do not calculators commonly used by trader whose sells baskets of chilies.

Theoretical questions at the end of a chapter or section should not be abandoned as well. The second type of question it is equally important to be done. Surely textbook authors have a specific intent to include this questions. And it is related with our understanding after learning.

Thus the tips and techniques that I use in order to graduate from the Faculty of Engineering, Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta. May be useful.
